During the 1940s and 1950s, Cook Islands women migrated to New Zealand as domestic workers. By the 1950s many Pacific Islands women, including a small number of Samoan and Niuean women, worked in factories or in hospitals. Family migration became more common during this period and, from the mid 1960s, included Tokelauans.
